I’m
just a kid. What can I do to help?
A
LOT!
There
are many ways kids of all ages can help support the Humane Society of
Fairfax County! Be creative! Following
are a few ideas:
Inform
Ask your principal if you can create and display a poster in your school
lobby – make a poster about important animal issues such as pet
overpopulation, adopting instead of buying a pet, or just about being
kind to animals. Include the Humane Society’s information on the
poster so people can request more information or become involved themselves!
Collect
You can organize or participate in a pet food drive or create a drop
box location at your school to collect "wish list” items
for the animals (treats and toys, for example).
You can
start a small business such as a lemonade or cookie stand and raise
money from your sales.
If you
are creative, you can draw animal pictures or even draw people’s
pets and sell your art to benefit the animals.
Kids
can organize car washes or large groups of motivated kids can orchestrate
a Strut-Your-Mutt / walk-a-thon to raise money.
Party!
That’s right! Have a party for the animals. Well, not FOR
the animals because they can't attend - but you and your parents can
host a get-together for friends and family and ask everyone to bring
a present or treat for the animals. Your guests enjoy themselves at
the party, the animals receive gifts – everyone wins!
Are
you allergic to animals but still want to help somehow?
We have many things you can do! Kids can help stock shelves or sort
donations at our thrift stores (one in Fairfax City, one in Falls Church
- minimum age: 15). The Thrift Stores
are a very important job since the income from sales helps support the
animals in our care!
Kids
of any age can also make cat and dog toys for our adoptables or even
bake healthy treats for our animals. We have lots of projects and recipes
we can share!
Scout
Troops
Troops usually participate in group projects, so if you are looking
for a Troop project, please
contact us with your details so we can help coordinate
the effort.
Remember:
Every project helps in some small way so you don’t have to do
something HUGE to make a difference in the lives of the animals!
And if
your entire CLASS wants to do a project, please ask your teacher to
contact us.
The
animals thank you for your compassion and support!
